Fasting is an essential aspect of our tradition, enabling us to restrain our passions and conform ourselves to our Divine Prototype, that is, Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
A detailed article on the importance of fasting by Assoc. Prof. Philip Kariatlis (Sub-Dean of St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College) is available on the website of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.
The Archdiocese website also features a calendar specifying when: (i) it is a strict fast; (ii) dairy, eggs, fish, and oil are allowed; and (iii) fasting need not take place. To access the calendar, click here.
Moreover, a Greek summary of the different fasting seasons may be accessed via this link.
