For more than one hundred years the Church of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil belief\, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isauri an (717-741) and ending in the reign of Theophilus (829-842). After Theoph ilus’s death\, his widow the Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb. 11)\, toget her with the Patriarch Methodius (June 14)\, established Orthodoxy anew. T his ever-memorable Queen venerated the icon of the Mother of God in the pr esence of the Patriarch Methodius and the other confessors and righteous m en\, and openly cried out these holy words: “If anyone does not offer rela tive worship to the holy icons\, not adoring them as though they were gods \, but venerating them out of love as images of the archetype\, let him be anathema.” Then with common prayer and fasting during the whole first wee k of the Forty-day Fast\, she asked God’s forgiveness for her husband. Aft er this\, on the first Sunday of the Fast\, she and her son\, Michael the Emperor\, made a procession with all the clergy and people and restored th e holy icons\, and again adorned the Church of Christ with them. This is t he holy deed that all we the Orthodox commemorate today\, and we call this radiant and venerable day the Sunday of Orthodoxy\, that is\, the triumph of true doctrine over heresy.

On Holy Monday we commemorate Joseph the Patriarch\, the beloved son of Jacob. A major figure of the Old Testament\, Joseph’s stor y is told in the final section of the Book of Genesis (chs. 37-50). Becaus e of his exceptional qualities and remarkable life\, our patristic and lit urgical tradition portrays Joseph as tipos Christou\, i.e.\, as a prototyp e\, prefigurement or image of Christ. The story of Joseph illustrates the mystery of God’s providence\, promise and redemption. Innocent\, chaste an d righteous\, his life bears witness to the power of God’s love and promis e. The lesson to be learned from Joseph’s life\, as it bears upon the ulti mate redemption wrought by the death and resurrection of Christ\, is summe d up in the words he addressed to his brothers who had previously betrayed him\, “’Fear not … As for you\, you meant evil against me\; but God meant it for good\, to bring about that many people should be kept alive\, as t hey are today. So do not fear\; I will provide for you and your little one s.’ Thus he reassured them and comforted them” (Genesis 50:19-21). The com memoration of the noble\, blessed and saintly Joseph reminds us that in th e great events of the Old Testament\, the Church recognizes the realities of the New Testament.
Also\, on Great and Holy Monday the Church c ommemorates the event of the cursing of the fig tree (Matthew 21:18-20). I n the Gospel narrative this event is said to have occurred on the morrow o f Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:18 and Mark 11:12). F or this reason it found its way into the liturgy of Great Monday. The epis ode is also quite relevant to Great Week. Together with the event of the c leansing of the Temple this episode is another manifestation of Jesus’ div ine power and authority and a revelation as well of God’s judgment upon th e faithlessness of the Jewish religious classes. The fig tree is symbolic of Israel become barren by her failure to recognize and receive Christ and His teachings. The cursing of the fig tree is a parable in action\, a sym bolic gesture. Its meaning should not be lost on any one in any generation . Christ’s judgment on the faithless\, unbelieving\, unrepentant and unlov ing will be certain and decisive on the Last Day. This episode makes it cl ear that nominal Christianity is not only inadequate\, it is also despicab le and unworthy of God’s kingdom. Genuine Christian faith is dynamic and f ruitful. It permeates one’s whole being and causes a change. Living\, true and unadulterated faith makes the Christian conscious of the fact that he is already a citizen of heaven. Therefore\, his way of thinking\, feeling \, acting and being must reflect this reality. Those who belong to Christ ought to live and walk in the Spirit\; and the Spirit will bear fruit in t hem: love\, joy\, peace\, patience\, kindness\, goodness\, faithfulness\, gentleness\, self-control (Galatians 5:22-25).
\n
On Holy Tuesday the Church calls to remembrance two parables\, which are related to the Second Coming. The one is the parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-3)\; the other the parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). These parables point to the inevitability of the Parousia and deal with such subjects as spirit ual vigilance\, stewardship\, accountability and judgment.
\nFrom th ese parables we learn at least two basic things. First\, Judgment Day will be like the situation in which the bridesmaids (or virgins) of the parabl e found themselves: some ready for it\, some not ready. The time one decid es for God is now and not at some undefined point in the future. If “time and tide waits for no man\,” certainly the Parousia is no exception. The t ragedy of the closed door is that individuals close it\, not God. The excl usion from the marriage feast\, the kingdom\, is of our own making. Second \, we are reminded that watchfulness and readiness do not mean a wearisome \, spiritless performance of formal and empty obligations. Most certainly it does not mean inactivity and slothfulness. Watchfulness signifies inner stability\, soberness\, tranquility and joy. It means spiritual alertness \, attentiveness and vigilance. Watchfulness is the deep personal resolve to find and do the will of God\, embrace every commandment and every virtu e\, and guard the intellect and heart from evil thoughts and actions. Watc hfulness is the intense love of God.

\nOn Holy Wednesday the
Church invites the faithful to focus their attention on two figures: the
sinful woman who anointed the head of Jesus shortly before the passion (Ma
tthew 26:6-13)\, and Judas\, the disciple who betrayed the Lord. The forme
r acknowledged Jesus as Lord\, while the latter severed himself from the M
aster. The one was set free\, while the other became a slave. The one inhe
rited the kingdom\, while the other fell into perdition. These two people
bring before us concerns and issues related to freedom\, sin\, hell and re
pentance.
\nThe repentance of the sinful harlot is contrasted with th
e tragic fall of the chosen disciple. The Triodion make is clear that Juda
s perished\, not simply because he betrayed his Master\, but because\, hav
ing fallen into the sin of betrayal\, he then refused to believe in the po
ssibility of forgiveness. If we deplore the actions of Judas\, we do so no
t with vindictive self-righteousness but conscious always of our own guilt
. In general\, all the passages in the Triodion that seem to be directed a
gainst the Jews should be understood in this same way. When the Triodion d
enounces those who rejected Christ and delivered Him to death\, we recogni
ze that these words apply not only to others\, but to ourselves: for have
we not betrayed the Savior many times in our hearts and crucified Him anew
?
\nI have transgressed more than the harlot\, O loving Lord\, yet ne
ver have I offered You my flowing tears. But in silence I fall down before
You and with love I kiss Your most pure feet\, beseeching You as Master t
o grant me remission of sins\; and I cry to You\, O Savior: Deliver me fro
m the filth of my works.
\nWhile the sinful woman brought oil of myrr
h\, the disciple came to an agreement with the transgressors. She rejoiced
to pour out what was very precious\, he made haste to sell the One who is
above all price. She acknowledged Christ as Lord\, he severed himself fro
m the Master. She was set free\, but Judas became the slave of the enemy.
Grievous was his lack of love. Great was her repentance. Grant such repent
ance also unto me\, O Savior who has suffered for our sake\, and save us.<

Holy Unction
\nWhen one is ill and in
pain\, this can very often be a time of life when one feels alone and iso
lated. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick\, or Holy Unction as it
is also known\, reminds us that when we are in pain\, either physical\, em
otional\, or spiritual\, Christ is present with us through the ministry of
His Church. He is among us to offer strength to meet the challenges of li
fe\, and even the approach of death.
\nAs with Chrismation\, oil is a
lso used in this Sacrament as a sign of God’s presence\, strength\, and fo
rgiveness. After the reading of seven Epistle lessons\, seven Gospel lesso
ns and the offering of seven prayers\, which are all devoted to healing\,
the priest anoints the body with the Holy Oil. Orthodoxy does not view thi
s Sacrament as available only to those who are near death. It is offered t
o all who are sick in body\, mind\, or spirit.
\nChrist came to the w
orld to “bear our infirmities.” One of the signs of His divine Messiahship
was to heal the sick. The power of healing remains in the Church since Ch
rist himself remains in the Church through the Holy Spirit.
\nThe Sac
rament of the Unction of the sick is the Church’s specific prayer for heal
ing. If the faith of the believers is strong enough\, and if it is the wil
l of God\, there is every reason to believe that the Lord can heal those w
ho are diseased.
\nThe biblical basis for the Sacrament is found in J
ames 5:14-16:
\nIs any among you sick\, let him call for the presbyte
rs of the church\, and let them pray over him\, anointing him with oil in
the name of the Lord\; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man\, an
d the Lord will raise him up\; and if he has committed sins\, he will be f
orgiven. Therefore\, confess your sins to one another and pray for one ano
ther\, that you may be healed.
\nIn ancient Christian literature one
may find indirect testimonies of the Mystery of Unction in Saint Irenaeus
of Lyons and in Origen. Later there are clear testimonies of it in Saints
Basil the Great and John Chrysostom\, who have left prayers for the healin
g of the infirm which entered later into the rite of Unction\; and likewis
e in Saint Cyril of Alexandria. In the fifth century\, Pope Innocent I ans
wered a series of questions concerning the Mystery of Unction\, indicating
in his answers that a) it should be performed “upon believers who are sic
k”\; b) it may be performed also by a bishop\, since one should not see in
the words of the Apostle\, let him call for the presbyters\, any prohibit
ion for a bishop to participate in the sacred action\; c) this anointment
may not be performed “on those undergoing ecclesiastical penance\,’ becaus
e it is a “Mystery\,’ and to those who are forbidden the other Mysteries\,
how can one allow only one?
\nThe express purpose of the Sacrament o
f Holy Unction is healing and forgiveness. Since it is not always the will
of God that there should be physical healing\, the prayer of Christ that
God’s will be done always remains as the proper context of the Sacrament.
In addition\, it is the clear intention of the Sacrament that through the
anointing of the sick body the sufferings of the person should be sanctifi
ed and united to the sufferings of Christ. In this way\, the wounds of the
flesh are consecrated\, and strength is given that the suffering of the d
iseased person may not be unto the death of his soul\, but for eternal sal
vation in the resurrection and life of the Kingdom of God.
\nIt is in
deed the case that death inevitably comes. All must die\, even those who i
n this life are given a reprieve through healing in order to have more tim
e on the earth. Thus\, the healing of the sick is not itself a final goal\
, but is merely “instrumental” in that it is given by God as a sign of his
mercy and as a grace for the further opportunity of man to live for him a
nd for others in the life of this world.
\nIn the case where a person
is obviously in the final moments of his earthly life\, the Church has sp
ecial prayers for the “separation of soul and body.” Thus\, it is clear th
at the Sacrament of Holy Unction is for the sick-both the physically and m
entally sick-and is not reserved for the moment of death. The Sacrament of
Unction is not the “last rites” as is sometimes thought\; the ritual of t
he anointing itself in no way indicates that it should be administered mer
ely in “extreme” cases. Holy Unction is the Sacrament of the spiritual\, p
hysical\, and mental healing of a sick person whatever the nature or the g
ravity of the illness may be.
One of the most ancient cities of the Promised Land was Shec hem\, also called Sikima\, located at the foot of Mount Gerazim. There the Israelites had heard the blessings in the days of Moses and Jesus of Navi . Near to this town\, Jacob\, who had come from Mesopotamia in the ninetee nth century before Christ\, bought a piece of land where there was a well. This well\, preserved even until the time of Christ\, was known as Jacob’ s Well. Later\, before he died in Egypt\, he left that piece of land as a special inheritance to his son Joseph (Gen. 49:22). This town\, before it was taken into possession by Samaria\, was also the leading city of the ki ngdom of the ten tribes. In the time of the Romans it was called Neapolis\ , and at present Nablus. It was the first city in Canaan visited by the Pa triarch Abraham. Here also\, Jesus of Navi (Joshua) addressed the tribes o f Israel for the last time. Almost three hundred years later\, all Israel assembled there to make Roboam (Rehoboam) king.
\nWhen our Lord Jesu s Christ\, then\, came at midday to this city\, which is also called Sycha r (John 4:5)\, He was wearied from the journey and the heat\, and He sat d own at this well. After a little while the Samaritan woman mentioned in to day’s Gospel passage came to draw water. As she conversed at some length w ith the Lord and heard from Him secret things concerning herself\, she bel ieved in Him\; through her many other Samaritans also believed.
\nCo ncerning the Samaritans we know the following: In the year 721 before Chri st\, Salmanasar (Shalmaneser)\, King of the Assyrians\, took the ten tribe s of the kingdom of Israel into captivity\, and relocated all these people to Babylon and the land of the Medes. From there he gathered various nati ons and sent them to Samaria. These nations had been idolaters from before . Although they were later instructed in the Jewish faith and believed in the one God\, they worshipped the idols also. Furthermore\, they accepted only the Pentateuch of Moses\, and rejected the other books of Holy Script ure. Nonetheless\, they thought themselves to be descendants of Abraham an d Jacob. Therefore\, the pious Jews named these Judaizing and idolatrous p eoples Samaritans\, since they lived in Samaria\, the former leading city of the Israelites\, as well as in the other towns thereabout. The Jews rej ected them as heathen and foreigners\, and had no communion with them at a ll\, as the Samaritan woman observed\, “the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans” (John 4:9). Therefore\, the name Samaritan is used derisively many times in the Gospel narrations. After the Ascension of the Lord\, an d the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost\, the woman of Samaria was b aptized by the holy Apostles and became a great preacher and Martyr of Chr ist\; she was called Photine\, and her feast is kept on February 26.

er of the Church of Alexandria. In 315\, he began to blaspheme against the
Son and Word of God\, saying that He is not true God\, consubstantial wit
h the Father\, but is rather a work and creation\, alien to the essence an
d glory of the Father\, and that there was a time when He was not. This fr
ightful blasphemy shook the faithful of Alexandria. Alexander\, his Archbi
shop\, after trying in vain to correct him through admonitions\, cut him o
ff from communion and finally in a local council deposed him in the year 3
21. Yet neither did the blasphemer wish to be corrected\, nor did he cease
sowing the deadly tares of his heretical teachings\; but writing to the b
ishops of other cities\, Arius and his followers requested that his doctri
ne be examined\, and if it were unsound\, that the correct teaching be dec
lared to him. By this means\, his heresy became universally known and won
many supporters\, so that the whole Church was soon in an uproar.
\nT
herefore\, moved by divine zeal\, the first Christian Sovereign\, Saint Co
nstantine the Great\, the equal to the Apostles\, summoned the renowned Fi
rst Ecumenical Council in Nicaea\, a city of Bithynia. It was there that t
he shepherds and teachers of the Church of Christ gathered from all region
s in the year 325. All of them\, with one mouth and one voice\, declared t
hat the Son and Word of God is one in essence with the Father\, true God o
f true God\, and they composed the holy Symbol of Faith up to the seventh
article (since the remainder\, beginning with “And in the Holy Spirit\,” w
as completed by the Second Ecumenical Council). Thus they anathematized th
e impious Arius of evil belief and those of like mind with him\, and cut t
hem off as rotten members from the whole body of the faithful.
\nTher
efore\, recognizing the divine Fathers as heralds of the Faith after the d
ivine Apostles\, the Church of Christ has appointed this present Sunday fo
r their annual commemoration\, in thanksgiving and unto the glory of God\,
unto their praise and honour\, and unto the strengthening of the true Fai
th.
This great and renowned
sovereign of the Christians was the son of Constantius Chlorus (the ruler
of the westernmost parts of the Roman empire)\, and of the blessed Helen.
He was born in 272\, in (according to some authorities) Naissus of Dardan
ia\, a city on the Hellespont. In 306\, when his father died\, he was proc
laimed successor to his throne. In 312\, on learning that Maxentius and Ma
ximinus had joined forces against him\, he marched into Italy\, where\, wh
ile at the head of his troops\, he saw in the sky after midday\, beneath t
he sun\, a radiant pillar in the form of a cross with the words: “By this
shalt thou conquer.” The following night\, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared
to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its signi
ficance. When he arose in the morning\, he immediately ordered that a laba
rum be made (which is a banner or standard of victory over the enemy) in t
he form of a cross\, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On t
he 28th Of October\, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius\, who dr
owned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day\, Constantine en
tered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate
\, while Licinius\, his brother-in-law\, ruled in the East. But out of mal
ice\, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him onc
e and again\, and utterly destroyed him in 324\, and in this manner he bec
ame monarch over the West and the East. Under him and because of him all t
he persecutions against the Church ceased. Christianity triumphed and idol
atry was overthrown. In 325 he gathered the First Ecumenical Council in Ni
caea\, which he himself personally addressed. In 324\, in the ancient city
of Byzantium\, he laid the foundations of the new capital of his realm\,
and solemnly inaugurated it on May 11\, 330\, naming it after himself\, Co
nstantinople. Since the throne of the imperial rule was transferred thithe
r from Rome\, it was named New Rome\, the inhabitants of its domain were c
alled Romans\, and it was considered the continuation of the Roman Empire.
Falling ill near Nicomedia\, he requested to receive divine Baptism\, acc
ording to Eusebius (The Life of Constantine. Book IV\, 61-62)\, and also a
ccording to Socrates and Sozomen\; and when he had been deemed worthy of t
he Holy Mysteries\, he reposed in 337\, on May 21 or 22\, the day of Pente
cost\, having lived sixty-five years\, of which he ruled for thirty-one ye
ars. His remains were transferred to Constantinople and were deposed in th
e Church of the Holy Apostles\, which had been built by him (see Homily XX
VI on Second Corinthians by Saint John Chrysostom).
\nAs for his holy
mother Helen\, after her son had made the Faith of Christ triumphant thro
ughout the Roman Empire\, she undertook a journey to Jerusalem and found t
he Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified (see Sept. 13 and 14). After
this\, Saint Helen\, in her zeal to glorify Christ\, erected churches in
Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection\, in Bethlehem
at the cave where our Saviour was born\, another on the Mount of Olives wh
ence He ascended into Heaven\, and many others throughout the Holy Land\,
Cyprus\, and elsewhere. She was proclaimed Augusta\, her image was stamped
upon golden coins\, and two cities were named Helenopolis after her in Bi
thynia and in Palestine. Having been thus glorified for her piety\, she de
parted to the Lord being about eighty years of age\, according to some in
the year 330\, according to others\, in 336.

\nOur righteous Father Symeon was born about the year 390 in a ce rtain village named Sis\, in the mountain region of Cilicia and Syria. Hav ing first been a shepherd\, he entered the monastic discipline at a young age. After trying various kinds of ascetical practices\, both in the monas tery and then in the wilderness\, he began standing on pillars of progress ively greater height\, and heroically persevered in this for more than for ty years\; the greater part of this time he spent standing upright\, even when one of his feet became gangrenous\, and other parts of his body gave way under the strain. He did not adopt this strange way of life out of vai nglory\, a charge that some of his contemporaries made against him at the first: because he was already famous for his asceticism and holiness befor e ascending his first pillar (in Greek\, style\, whence he is called “Styl ite”)\, many pious people came to him wishing to touch his garments\, eith er for healing or for a blessing\; to escape the continual vexation they c aused\, he made a pillar about ten feet high\, and then higher and higher\ , until the fourth and last was about fifty feet high. The Church historia n Theodoret of Cyrrhus\, an eyewitness of his exploits who wrote of him wh ile Symeon was yet alive\, called him “the great wonder of the world.” God gave him the grace to persevere in such an astonishing form of asceticism that multitudes came to see him from Persia\, Armenia\, South Arabia\, Ge orgia\, Thrace\, Spain\, Italy\, Gaul\, and the British Isles. Theodoret s ays that he became so famous in Rome that the Nomadic Arabs by the thousan ds believed in Christ and were baptized because of him\; the King of Persi a sent envoys to inquire into his way of life\, and the Queen asked to be sent oil that he had blessed. He also was a great defender of sound doctri ne\, and confirmed the Orthodoxy of the Holy Council of Chalcedon for many who had been beguiled by the teachings of the Monophysites\, including th e Empress Eudocia\, widow of Theodosius the Younger. \nSaint Helen\, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great\, when sh
e was already advanced in years\, undertook\, in her great piety\, the har
dships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross\, about the year 3
25. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon G
olgotha\, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Pas
sion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite de
stroyed\, and the earth removed\, revealing the Tomb of our Lord\, and thr
ee crosses. Of these\, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord\,
the other two of the thieves crucified with Him\; but Saint Helen was at
a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of
Saint Macarius\, Archbishop of Jerusalem\, a lady of Jerusalem\, who was
already at the point of death from a certain disease\, was brought to touc
h the crosses\, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord\, sh
e was made perfectly whole. Consequently\, the precious Cross was lifted o
n high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem\; as he stood on the ambo\, and
when the people beheld it\, they cried out\, “Lord have mercy.” It should
be noted that after its discovery\, a portion of the venerable Cross was
taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in t
he magnificent church built by Saint Helen\, until the year 614. At that t
ime\, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own cou
ntry (see Jan. 22\, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late\, in the year 628\
, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign\, retrieved the Cross\,
and after bringing it to Constantinople\, himself escorted it back to Jer
usalem\, where he restored it to its place.
Saint Euphemia was from Chalcedon and lived in virginity. According to some\, she suffered martyrdom during the reign of Diocletian\, in 303\; according to others\, in 307. Her sacred relics are preserved in the Patriarchate in Constantinople.

\nThe holy Martyr Eustathius before his baptism was an illustrious
Roman general named Placidas in the days of the Emperor Trajan. While hunt
ing in the country one day\, he was converted to the Faith of Christ throu
gh the apparition of an uncommonly majestic stag\, between whose antlers h
e saw the Cross of Christ\, and through which the Lord spoke to him with a
human voice. Upon returning home\, he learned that his wife Tatiana had a
lso had a vision in which she was instructed to become a Christian. They s
ought out the Bishop of the Christians and were baptized\, Placidas receiv
ing the name Eustathius\, and Tatiana the name Theopiste\; their two sons
were baptized Agapius and Theopistus. The family was then subjected to suc
h trials as Job endured. Their servants died\, all their goods were stolen
\, and on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem they were scattered abroad\, each not
even knowing if the others were still alive. By the providence of God\, th
ey were united again after many years\, and returned to Rome in glory. Nev
ertheless\, when they refused to sacrifice to the idols-a public sacrifice
from which no Roman general could be absent-the Emperor Hadrian\, who had
succeeded Trajan\, had them put into a large bronze device in the shape o
f a bull\, which was heated with fire until they died. When their holy bod
ies were removed\, they were found to be without harm. They suffered marty
rdom about the year 126.
This saint was from the city of Iconium. When she was eighte en years of age\, she was instructed in the Faith of Christ and the hope o f the resurrection by the Apostle Paul\, whom also she followed\, forsakin g her betrothed and espousing a life of virginity for the sake of the Heav enly Bridegroom. Having preached Christ in various cities and suffered man y things\, she reposed in Seleucia of Cilicia at the age of 90.
