DESCRIPTION:Sunday of Orthodoxy\nFor more than one hundred years the Church
of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil beli
ef\, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isaurian (717-741) and ending in th
e reign of Theophilus (829-842). After Theophilus’s death\, his widow the
Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb. 11)\, together with the Patriarch Method
ius (June 14)\, established Orthodoxy anew. This ever-memorable Queen vene
rated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch Metho
dius and the other confessors and righteous men\, and openly cried out the
se holy words: “If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy icon
s\, not adoring them as though they were gods\, but venerating them out of
love as images of the archetype\, let him be anathema.” Then with common
prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast\, she
asked God’s forgiveness for her husband. After this\, on the first Sunday
of the Fast\, she and her son\, Michael the Emperor\, made a procession w
ith all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons\, and again ador
ned the Church of Christ with them. This is the holy deed that all we the
Orthodox commemorate today\, and we call this radiant and venerable day th
e Sunday of Orthodoxy\, that is\, the triumph of true doctrine over heresy

ay of Orthodoxy</strong></h2>\n<p>For more than one hundred years the Chur
ch of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil be
lief\, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isaurian (717-741) and ending in
the reign of Theophilus (829-842). After Theophilus’s death\, his widow th
e Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb. 11)\, together with the Patriarch Meth
odius (June 14)\, established Orthodoxy anew. This ever-memorable Queen ve
nerated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch Met
hodius and the other confessors and righteous men\, and openly cried out t
hese holy words: “If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy ic
ons\, not adoring them as though they were gods\, but venerating them out
of love as images of the archetype\, let him be anathema.” Then with commo
n prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast\, s
he asked God’s forgiveness for her husband. After this\, on the first Sund
ay of the Fast\, she and her son\, Michael the Emperor\, made a procession
with all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons\, and again ad
orned the Church of Christ with them. This is the holy deed that all we th
e Orthodox commemorate today\, and we call this radiant and venerable day
the Sunday of Orthodoxy\, that is\, the triumph of true doctrine over here
 sy.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>*GOAA</p>\n</BODY></HTML>

DESCRIPTION:Beginning on the evening of Palm Sunday and continuing through
the evening of Holy Tuesday\, the Orthodox Church observes a special servi
ce known as the Service of the Bridegroom. Each evening service is the Mat
ins or Orthros service of the following day (e.g. the service held on Sund
ay evening is the Orthros service for Holy Monday). The name of the servic
e is from the figure of the Bridegroom in the parable of the Ten Virgins f
ound in Matthew 25:1-13.\nHoly Monday\nOn Holy Monday we commemorate Josep
h the Patriarch\, the beloved son of Jacob. A major figure of the Old Test
ament\, Joseph’s story is told in the final section of the Book of Genesis
(chs. 37-50). Because of his exceptional qualities and remarkable life\,
our patristic and liturgical tradition portrays Joseph as tipos Christou\,
i.e.\, as a prototype\, prefigurement or image of Christ. The story of Jo
seph illustrates the mystery of God’s providence\, promise and redemption.
Innocent\, chaste and righteous\, his life bears witness to the power of
God’s love and promise. The lesson to be learned from Joseph’s life\, as i
t bears upon the ultimate redemption wrought by the death and resurrection
of Christ\, is summed up in the words he addressed to his brothers who ha
d previously betrayed him\, “’Fear not … As for you\, you meant evil again
st me\; but God meant it for good\, to bring about that many people should
be kept alive\, as they are today. So do not fear\; I will provide for yo
u and your little ones.’ Thus he reassured them and comforted them” (Genes
is 50:19-21). The commemoration of the noble\, blessed and saintly Joseph
reminds us that in the great events of the Old Testament\, the Church reco
gnizes the realities of the New Testament.\nAlso\, on Great and Holy Monda
y the Church commemorates the event of the cursing of the fig tree (Matthe
w 21:18-20). In the Gospel narrative this event is said to have occurred o
n the morrow of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:18 and
Mark 11:12). For this reason it found its way into the liturgy of Great Mo
nday. The episode is also quite relevant to Great Week. Together with the
event of the cleansing of the Temple this episode is another manifestation
of Jesus’ divine power and authority and a revelation as well of God’s ju
dgment upon the faithlessness of the Jewish religious classes. The fig tre
e is symbolic of Israel become barren by her failure to recognize and rece
ive Christ and His teachings. The cursing of the fig tree is a parable in
action\, a symbolic gesture. Its meaning should not be lost on any one in
any generation. Christ’s judgment on the faithless\, unbelieving\, unrepen
tant and unloving will be certain and decisive on the Last Day. This episo
de makes it clear that nominal Christianity is not only inadequate\, it is
also despicable and unworthy of God’s kingdom. Genuine Christian faith is
dynamic and fruitful. It permeates one’s whole being and causes a change.
Living\, true and unadulterated faith makes the Christian conscious of th
e fact that he is already a citizen of heaven. Therefore\, his way of thin
king\, feeling\, acting and being must reflect this reality. Those who bel
ong to Christ ought to live and walk in the Spirit\; and the Spirit will b
 ear fruit in them: love\, joy\, peace\, patience\, kindness\, goodness\, f
 aithfulness\, gentleness\, self-control (Galatians 5:22-25).

DESCRIPTION:Holy Tuesday\nOn Holy Tuesday the Church calls to remembrance t
wo parables\, which are related to the Second Coming. The one is the parab
le of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-3)\; the other the parable of the Tale
nts (Matthew 25:14-30). These parables point to the inevitability of the P
arousia and deal with such subjects as spiritual vigilance\, stewardship\,
accountability and judgment.\nFrom these parables we learn at least two b
asic things. First\, Judgment Day will be like the situation in which the
bridesmaids (or virgins) of the parable found themselves: some ready for i
t\, some not ready. The time one decides for God is now and not at some un
defined point in the future. If “time and tide waits for no man\,” certain
ly the Parousia is no exception. The tragedy of the closed door is that in
dividuals close it\, not God. The exclusion from the marriage feast\, the
kingdom\, is of our own making. Second\, we are reminded that watchfulness
and readiness do not mean a wearisome\, spiritless performance of formal
and empty obligations. Most certainly it does not mean inactivity and slot
hfulness. Watchfulness signifies inner stability\, soberness\, tranquility
and joy. It means spiritual alertness\, attentiveness and vigilance. Watc
hfulness is the deep personal resolve to find and do the will of God\, emb
race every commandment and every virtue\, and guard the intellect and hear
t from evil thoughts and actions. Watchfulness is the intense love of God.

DESCRIPTION:Holy Wednesday\nOn Holy Wednesday the Church invites the faithf
ul to focus their attention on two figures: the sinful woman who anointed
the head of Jesus shortly before the passion (Matthew 26:6-13)\, and Judas
\, the disciple who betrayed the Lord. The former acknowledged Jesus as Lo
rd\, while the latter severed himself from the Master. The one was set fre
e\, while the other became a slave. The one inherited the kingdom\, while
the other fell into perdition. These two people bring before us concerns a
nd issues related to freedom\, sin\, hell and repentance.\nThe repentance
of the sinful harlot is contrasted with the tragic fall of the chosen disc
iple. The Triodion make is clear that Judas perished\, not simply because
he betrayed his Master\, but because\, having fallen into the sin of betra
yal\, he then refused to believe in the possibility of forgiveness. If we
deplore the actions of Judas\, we do so not with vindictive self-righteous
ness but conscious always of our own guilt. In general\, all the passages
in the Triodion that seem to be directed against the Jews should be unders
tood in this same way. When the Triodion denounces those who rejected Chri
st and delivered Him to death\, we recognize that these words apply not on
ly to others\, but to ourselves: for have we not betrayed the Savior many
times in our hearts and crucified Him anew?\nI have transgressed more than
the harlot\, O loving Lord\, yet never have I offered You my flowing tear
 s. But in silence I fall down before You and with love I kiss Your most pu
re feet\, beseeching You as Master to grant me remission of sins\; and I c
ry to You\, O Savior: Deliver me from the filth of my works.\nWhile the si
nful woman brought oil of myrrh\, the disciple came to an agreement with t
he transgressors. She rejoiced to pour out what was very precious\, he mad
e haste to sell the One who is above all price. She acknowledged Christ as
Lord\, he severed himself from the Master. She was set free\, but Judas b
ecame the slave of the enemy. Grievous was his lack of love. Great was her
repentance. Grant such repentance also unto me\, O Savior who has suffere

ause he betrayed his Master\, but because\, having fallen into the sin of
betrayal\, he then refused to believe in the possibility of forgiveness. I
f we deplore the actions of Judas\, we do so not with vindictive self-righ
teousness but conscious always of our own guilt. In general\, all the pass
ages in the Triodion that seem to be directed against the Jews should be u
nderstood in this same way. When the Triodion denounces those who rejected
Christ and delivered Him to death\, we recognize that these words apply n
ot only to others\, but to ourselves: for have we not betrayed the Savior
many times in our hearts and crucified Him anew?<br />\nI have transgresse
d more than the harlot\, O loving Lord\, yet never have I offered You my f
lowing tears. But in silence I fall down before You and with love I kiss Y
our most pure feet\, beseeching You as Master to grant me remission of sin
s\; and I cry to You\, O Savior: Deliver me from the filth of my works.<br
/>\nWhile the sinful woman brought oil of myrrh\, the disciple came to an
agreement with the transgressors. She rejoiced to pour out what was very
precious\, he made haste to sell the One who is above all price. She ackno
wledged Christ as Lord\, he severed himself from the Master. She was set f
ree\, but Judas became the slave of the enemy. Grievous was his lack of lo
ve. Great was her repentance. Grant such repentance also unto me\, O Savio
r who has suffered for our sake\, and save us.</p>\n</BODY></HTML>

DESCRIPTION:Holy Unction\nWhen one is ill and in pain\, this can very often
be a time of life when one feels alone and isolated. The Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick\, or Holy Unction as it is also known\, reminds us
that when we are in pain\, either physical\, emotional\, or spiritual\, Ch
rist is present with us through the ministry of His Church. He is among us
to offer strength to meet the challenges of life\, and even the approach
of death.\nAs with Chrismation\, oil is also used in this Sacrament as a s
ign of God’s presence\, strength\, and forgiveness. After the reading of s
even Epistle lessons\, seven Gospel lessons and the offering of seven pray
ers\, which are all devoted to healing\, the priest anoints the body with
the Holy Oil. Orthodoxy does not view this Sacrament as available only to
those who are near death. It is offered to all who are sick in body\, mind
\, or spirit.\nChrist came to the world to “bear our infirmities.” One of
the signs of His divine Messiahship was to heal the sick. The power of hea
ling remains in the Church since Christ himself remains in the Church thro
ugh the Holy Spirit.\nThe Sacrament of the Unction of the sick is the Chur
ch’s specific prayer for healing. If the faith of the believers is strong
enough\, and if it is the will of God\, there is every reason to believe t
hat the Lord can heal those who are diseased.\nThe biblical basis for the
Sacrament is found in James 5:14-16:\nIs any among you sick\, let him call
for the presbyters of the church\, and let them pray over him\, anointing
him with oil in the name of the Lord\; and the prayer of faith will save
the sick man\, and the Lord will raise him up\; and if he has committed si
ns\, he will be forgiven. Therefore\, confess your sins to one another and
pray for one another\, that you may be healed.\nIn ancient Christian lite
rature one may find indirect testimonies of the Mystery of Unction in Sain
t Irenaeus of Lyons and in Origen. Later there are clear testimonies of it
in Saints Basil the Great and John Chrysostom\, who have left prayers for
  the healing of the infirm which entered later into the rite of Unction\;
and likewise in Saint Cyril of Alexandria. In the fifth century\, Pope Inn
ocent I answered a series of questions concerning the Mystery of Unction\,
indicating in his answers that a) it should be performed “upon believers
who are sick”\; b) it may be performed also by a bishop\, since one should
not see in the words of the Apostle\, let him call for the presbyters\, a
ny prohibition for a bishop to participate in the sacred action\; c) this
anointment may not be performed “on those undergoing ecclesiastical penanc
e\,’ because it is a “Mystery\,’ and to those who are forbidden the other
Mysteries\, how can one allow only one?\nThe express purpose of the Sacram
ent of Holy Unction is healing and forgiveness. Since it is not always the
will of God that there should be physical healing\, the prayer of Christ
that God’s will be done always remains as the proper context of the Sacram
ent. In addition\, it is the clear intention of the Sacrament that through
the anointing of the sick body the sufferings of the person should be san
ctified and united to the sufferings of Christ. In this way\, the wounds o
f the flesh are consecrated\, and strength is given that the suffering of
the diseased person may not be unto the death of his soul\, but for eterna
l salvation in the resurrection and life of the Kingdom of God.\nIt is ind
eed the case that death inevitably comes. All must die\, even those who in
this life are given a reprieve through healing in order to have more time
on the earth. Thus\, the healing of the sick is not itself a final goal\,
but is merely “instrumental” in that it is given by God as a sign of his
mercy and as a grace for the further opportunity of man to live for him an
d for others in the life of this world.\nIn the case where a person is obv
iously in the final moments of his earthly life\, the Church has special p
rayers for the “separation of soul and body.” Thus\, it is clear that the
Sacrament of Holy Unction is for the sick-both the physically and mentally
sick-and is not reserved for the moment of death. The Sacrament of Unctio
n is not the “last rites” as is sometimes thought\; the ritual of the anoi
nting itself in no way indicates that it should be administered merely in
“extreme” cases. Holy Unction is the Sacrament of the spiritual\, physical
\, and mental healing of a sick person whatever the nature or the gravity
 of the illness may be.

DESCRIPTION:One of the most ancient cities of the Promised Land was Shechem
\, also called Sikima\, located at the foot of Mount Gerazim. There the Is
raelites had heard the blessings in the days of Moses and Jesus of Navi. N
ear to this town\, Jacob\, who had come from Mesopotamia in the nineteenth
century before Christ\, bought a piece of land where there was a well. Th
is well\, preserved even until the time of Christ\, was known as Jacob’s W
ell. Later\, before he died in Egypt\, he left that piece of land as a spe
cial inheritance to his son Joseph (Gen. 49:22). This town\, before it was
taken into possession by Samaria\, was also the leading city of the kingd
om of the ten tribes. In the time of the Romans it was called Neapolis\, a
nd at present Nablus. It was the first city in Canaan visited by the Patri
arch Abraham. Here also\, Jesus of Navi (Joshua) addressed the tribes of I
srael for the last time. Almost three hundred years later\, all Israel ass
embled there to make Roboam (Rehoboam) king.\nWhen our Lord Jesus Christ\,
then\, came at midday to this city\, which is also called Sychar (John 4:
5)\, He was wearied from the journey and the heat\, and He sat down at thi

el passage came to draw water. As she conversed at some length with the Lo
rd and heard from Him secret things concerning herself\, she believed in H
im\; through her many other Samaritans also believed.\nConcerning the Sama
ritans we know the following: In the year 721 before Christ\, Salmanasar (
Shalmaneser)\, King of the Assyrians\, took the ten tribes of the kingdom
of Israel into captivity\, and relocated all these people to Babylon and t
he land of the Medes. From there he gathered various nations and sent them
to Samaria. These nations had been idolaters from before. Although they w
ere later instructed in the Jewish faith and believed in the one God\, the
y worshipped the idols also. Furthermore\, they accepted only the Pentateu
ch of Moses\, and rejected the other books of Holy Scripture. Nonetheless\
, they thought themselves to be descendants of Abraham and Jacob. Therefor
e\, the pious Jews named these Judaizing and idolatrous peoples Samaritans
\, since they lived in Samaria\, the former leading city of the Israelites
\, as well as in the other towns thereabout. The Jews rejected them as hea
then and foreigners\, and had no communion with them at all\, as the Samar
itan woman observed\, “the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans” (Joh
n 4:9). Therefore\, the name Samaritan is used derisively many times in th
e Gospel narrations. After the Ascension of the Lord\, and the descent of
the Holy Spirit at Pentecost\, the woman of Samaria was baptized by the ho
ly Apostles and became a great preacher and Martyr of Christ\; she was cal
led Photine\, and her feast is kept on February 26.

DESCRIPTION:The heresiarch Arius was a Libyan by race and a protopresbyter
of the Church of Alexandria. In 315\, he began to blaspheme against the So
n and Word of God\, saying that He is not true God\, consubstantial with t
he Father\, but is rather a work and creation\, alien to the essence and g
lory of the Father\, and that there was a time when He was not. This frigh
tful blasphemy shook the faithful of Alexandria. Alexander\, his Archbisho
p\, after trying in vain to correct him through admonitions\, cut him off
from communion and finally in a local council deposed him in the year 321.
Yet neither did the blasphemer wish to be corrected\, nor did he cease so
wing the deadly tares of his heretical teachings\; but writing to the bish
ops of other cities\, Arius and his followers requested that his doctrine
be examined\, and if it were unsound\, that the correct teaching be declar
ed to him. By this means\, his heresy became universally known and won man
y supporters\, so that the whole Church was soon in an uproar.\nTherefore\
, moved by divine zeal\, the first Christian Sovereign\, Saint Constantine
the Great\, the equal to the Apostles\, summoned the renowned First Ecume
nical Council in Nicaea\, a city of Bithynia. It was there that the shephe
rds and teachers of the Church of Christ gathered from all regions in the
year 325. All of them\, with one mouth and one voice\, declared that the S
on and Word of God is one in essence with the Father\, true God of true Go
d\, and they composed the holy Symbol of Faith up to the seventh article (
since the remainder\, beginning with “And in the Holy Spirit\,” was comple
ted by the Second Ecumenical Council). Thus they anathematized the impious
Arius of evil belief and those of like mind with him\, and cut them off a
s rotten members from the whole body of the faithful.\nTherefore\, recogni
zing the divine Fathers as heralds of the Faith after the divine Apostles\
, the Church of Christ has appointed this present Sunday for their annual
commemoration\, in thanksgiving and unto the glory of God\, unto their pra
ise and honour\, and unto the strengthening of the true Faith.

of Constantius Chlorus (the ruler of the westernmost parts of the Roman e
mpire)\, and of the blessed Helen. He was born in 272\, in (according to s
ome authorities) Naissus of Dardania\, a city on the Hellespont. In 306\,
when his father died\, he was proclaimed successor to his throne. In 312\,
on learning that Maxentius and Maximinus had joined forces against him\,
he marched into Italy\, where\, while at the head of his troops\, he saw i
n the sky after midday\, beneath the sun\, a radiant pillar in the form of
a cross with the words: “By this shalt thou conquer.” The following night
\, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him th
e power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning\,
he immediately ordered that a labarum be made (which is a banner or standa

it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of October\, he attacked and mig
htily conquered Maxentius\, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing.
The following day\, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed
Emperor of the West by the Senate\, while Licinius\, his brother-in-law\,
ruled in the East. But out of malice\, Licinius later persecuted the Chri
stians. Constantine fought him once and again\, and utterly destroyed him
in 324\, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East.
Under him and because of him all the persecutions against the Church cease
 d. Christianity triumphed and idolatry was overthrown. In 325 he gathered
the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea\, which he himself personally addre
ssed. In 324\, in the ancient city of Byzantium\, he laid the foundations
of the new capital of his realm\, and solemnly inaugurated it on May 11\,
330\, naming it after himself\, Constantinople. Since the throne of the im

stantinople and were deposed in the Church of the Holy Apostles\, which ha

ney to Jerusalem and found the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified
(see Sept. 13 and 14). After this\, Saint Helen\, in her zeal to glorify C

Resurrection\, in Bethlehem at the cave where our Saviour was born\, anoth

DESCRIPTION:Reading\nThis Apostle was from Bethsaida of Galilee\, and was t
he son of Zebedee and Salome\, and the brother of James the elder. First a
fisherman by trade\, he became an Apostle and the beloved Disciple of Chr
ist. Only he of all the Disciples followed Him even to the Cross\, and was
entrusted with the care of our Saviour’s Mother\, as it were another son
to her\, and a brother of Christ the Teacher. After this\, he preached thr
oughout Asia Minor\, especially in Ephesus. When the second persecution ag
ainst the Christians began in the year 96 during the reign of Domitian\, h
e was taken in bonds to Rome\, and there was cast into a vat filled to the
brim with boiling oil. Coming forth therefrom unharmed\, he was exiled to
the island of Patmos\, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Returning a
gain to Ephesus after the death of the tyrant\, he wrote his Gospel (after
the other Evangelists had already written theirs) and his three Catholic
Epistles. In all\, he lived ninety-five years and fell asleep in the Lord
during the reign of Trajan in the year 100. He was called Theologian becau
se he loftily expounded in his Gospel the theology of the inexpressible an
d eternal birth of the Son and Word of God the Father. It is for this caus
e that an eagle-a symbol of the Holy Spirit\, as Saint Irenaeus says-is de
picted in his icon\, for this was one of the four symbolic living creature
s that the Prophet Ezekiel saw (Ezek. 1:10).
